Bathroom Playlist Trends: Spotify Insights Revealed

Music can create soundtracks for nearly every moment of our lives — even the most private ones. Whether it's a morning shower playlist or a carefully curated selection for bath time, people around the world use music to enhance their bathroom routines. Our new study explores this intimate intersection of music and daily habits, telling us what people choose to play in these private moments and why.

Key Findings

  • Taylor Swift is the most popular artist on shower and bath playlists.
  • Tyler, The Creator is the most popular artist to listen to while pooping.
  • Deftones are the most popular metal band on pooping playlists, while Metallica is the most popular for shower and bath playlists.
  • 27% of people listen to music while showering, and 11% listen to music while on the toilet.
  • Nearly 4 in 10 (38%) use AirPods on the toilet, and 1 in 20 admit to anxiety about being overheard.
  • British listeners favour Pop (42%) for showers, slightly higher than Americans (38%).
  • Americans are 55% more likely to listen to EDM in the shower.

Top Artists Shaping Bathroom Soundscapes

People choose different music for different moods and moments — including their bathroom routines. Let's see what their listening patterns say.

Top Artists on Spotify Bathroom Playlist

From relaxing soaks to invigorating showers, Taylor Swift was the most-played artist in both settings. Avicii turned out to be the most popular EDM artist for these sudsy sessions. Besides cleansing routines, Tyler, the Creator dominated poop-time playlists.

Other artists proved they could set the mood for any bathroom activity — Drake and Kanye West showed up consistently across all bathroom playlists. Metal fans showed different preferences depending on their activity, choosing Metallica for bath and shower sessions but switching to Deftones for pooping.

Most-Played Songs for Every Bathroom Moment

Just like their choice of artists, people's song selections reveal distinct preferences for different bathroom activities. Here's what topped the charts.

Top Bathroom Playlist Songs

The Neighbourhood's "Sweater Weather" was the most-played song during showers, while Miley Cyrus's "Flowers" dominated bathtub playlists. For pooping, listeners most often chose Robert Christopher Hughes's "Day Theme" to accompany their visit.

Top Habits, Genres, and Tech

From morning showers to quick bathroom breaks, people's music choices reveal interesting patterns about how they soundtrack these private moments. Let's explore their habits, motivations, and favourite genres.

Bathroom Music Habits

More than a quarter of people (27%) said they listen to music during showers, while 11% do so during toilet visits. British respondents were more likely to do the latter, with 28% playing music during these moments. Entertainment and distraction were the primary motivations for listening to music in the bathroom (56%), followed closely by relaxation and unwinding (53%) and mood or energy enhancement (44%).

Could headphones be the new bathroom accessories? Among toilet-time listeners, nearly 4 in 10 (38%) used AirPods on the toilet, and 1 in 20 expressed anxiety about being overheard.

Music Genres & Bathroom Time

As far as genre, pop music dominated both shower playlists (40%) and poop-time listening (23%). British listeners showed a particularly strong preference for pop during showers (42%), though, compared to their American counterparts (38%). While both nations favoured pop overall, Americans were 55% more likely to choose EDM for their shower soundtracks.

Understanding Our Most Private Playlists

From pop dominance to genre-specific timing patterns, our bathroom music habits reveal more than just listening preferences — they show how deeply music has become integrated into our most private moments. While some use it for entertainment or distraction, others seek relaxation or energy boosts, demonstrating music's versatile role in enhancing daily routines. As technology continues to make music more portable and personal, these intimate soundtracks have become an essential part of how we experience even our most private moments.

Methodology

We surveyed 500 British and 500 American participants about their music-listening habits in the bathroom. We also analysed over 300,000 songs from Spotify playlists curated for bathroom time (based on playlists filtered by the following terms: "shower," "bathtub," and "pooping").
